Rosenberger v. Rector & Visitors of the University of Virginia

Summary

The University of Virginia maintained a student activity fund that was funded via mandatory student fees. The fund was used to assist 118 student groups and newspapers but prohibited funding of any religious group. Nonetheless, funds were used to support newspapers for a Muslim student group and the Jewish Law Students Association, but denied to a Christian student newspaper. ADF filed an amicus brief in their support at the U.S. Supreme Court. The Court found that denial of access to the fund based upon the content of the viewpoints to be expressed was viewpoint discrimination and a violation of the First Amendment.
