Victory in Jesus Campus Ministries at Bowie State University

Summary

In 2012, a student member of Victory in Jesus Campus Ministries at Bowie State University in Maryland obtained permission to conduct a petition drive for Maryland Marriage Alliance. To advertise the drive, she posted approved fliers all over campus, including one in a hallway near the school’s LGBT resource center. Shortly thereafter, a University official informed her that someone had complained about the flier being near the LGBT resource center and planned to file a complaint accusing her of a hate crime. ADF sent a demand letter to the University explaining her First Amendment rights. The school responded, insuring she had violated no policies and apologizing to the student.
