Young America’s Foundation v. Covino

Summary

Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) chapter at California State University, Los Angeles, hosted Ben Shapiro for an event in February 2016. The University demanded that the group pay more than $600 in security costs for Ben Shapiro’s lecture and then threatened to cancel the event altogether. Faculty members intimidated YAF members and organized a mob of students to physically block access to the event, preventing students who wanted to hear Shapiro speak from entering. The administration ordered the police not to intervene to protect the YAF students and their First Amendment rights. ADF filed a lawsuit, and the University subsequently agreed to correct the security fee policy and ensure that its “Free Expression” policy was enforced in a viewpoint neutral way.
