WHO: ADF Senior Counsel Tyson Langhofer and other free speech experts
WHAT: Testifying before joint hearing of the U.S. House Subcommittee on Healthcare, Benefits, and Administrative Rules and the Subcommittee on Intergovernmental Affairs
WHEN: Tuesday, May 22, at 2 p.m. EDT
WHERE: 2154 Rayburn House Office Building, Washington, or watch live stream
Other experts testifying at the joint hearing include Allison Stanger, the Middlebury College professor who was hospitalized after an angry mob physically attacked her in the process of assaulting political scientist Charles Murray, and Robbie P. George, McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence and Director of the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions at Princeton University.
“Unfortunately, our colleges and universities are not the marketplace of ideas that they are supposed to be,” Langhofer said. “Public universities and colleges spend millions of dollars every year on all kinds of diversity initiatives. Yet, in spite of this diversity, public universities are some of the most ideologically intolerant places in the entire country. Why is that? I believe that it’s a lack of intellectual diversity—diversity of thought. Uniformity of thought breeds intolerance.”
The Subcommittee on Healthcare, Benefits, and Administrative Rules and the Subcommittee on Intergovernmental Affairs, which are hosting the joint hearing, are both under the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.
The ADF Center for Academic Freedom is dedicated to ensuring freedom of speech and association for students and faculty so that everyone can freely participate in the marketplace of ideas without fear of government censorship.
