Christian Legal Society Chapter at Southern Illinois University School of Law v. Walker

Summary

In 2005, Southern Illinois University School of Law revoked the Christian Legal Society’s status as a registered student group, claiming its faith standards violated the school’s nondiscrimination policy even though all of CLS’s meetings and events were open to everyone. ADF and CLS filed suit and, in 2006, the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals granted a preliminary injunction reinstating the group’s recognized status. The University subsequently settled the case, allowing CLS to retain its faith-based requirements for members and leaders, and establishing a $10,000 scholarship fund to be administered by CLS.
