Turning Point USA at University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point

Summary

Emily Strangfeld, along with other students, organized a Turning Point USA chapter at UW-Stevens Point. TPUSA is a national organization promoting of fiscal responsibility, free markets, and limited government. The chapter satisfied the six application requirements for recognition, yet the school’s student senate still voted to deny recognition without explanation. Although an administrator rightly reversed the decision, Alliance Defending Freedom sent a letter to the school regarding the school’s unconstitutional policy. The policy gives the campus senate and the administrator unlimited authority to deny recognition and funding to any group opposed by the student government. The letter calls out this First Amendment violation and urges a response from the school by November 27 to avoid litigation. In response, the University modified its policy to remove the discretion from the student senate and requiring student groups to be recognized if they satisfy the minimal objective criteria identified in the policy.
