Christian Legal Society Chapter at the University of Iowa v. University of Iowa

Summary

The University of Iowa refused to recognize the Christian Legal Society as an official student group because the group required members and leaders to adhere to the statement of faith of the organization. The University believed this to violate its “nondiscrimination” policy, and therefore unconstitutionally sought to deny CLS the right to retain faith-based requirements for members and leaders. When ADF and CLS threatened to sue, the University agreed to amend its policy to protect the rights of religious student groups like CLS.
