4 ADF Clients on Stage for the Signing of the Executive Order on Free Speech at Universities
Public universities have a responsibility to respect and protect the First Amendment rights of their students.
That should be common sense.
Yet, here at Alliance Defending Freedom, we’ve seen that this is not the case. The ADF Center for Academic Freedom has represented students and professors at public colleges and universities across the country where school officials have ignored and trampled on their First Amendment rights.
Why Perry High School in Gilbert, AZ Must Remove This Student’s Suspension
Friday March 1st started out like any other day. It was spirit week at Perry High School in Gilbert, Arizona, and Logan Jones, a high school freshman, was excited to dress up for “Party in the USA day.”
After classes had been dismissed, Logan and her friend were doing what most teenagers do—taking pictures in their spirit wear. Then, suddenly, things took an unexpected turn.
And the day ended with Logan being suspended from school for 10 days.
MUST READ: Former ACLU President Nadine Strossen Lends a Hand to ADF
It’s no secret that ADF often finds itself on the opposite side of the courtroom from the American Civil Liberties Union – better known as the ACLU.
In case you need a refresher: The ACLU is suing Washington florist Barronelle Stutzman because she declined to design custom floral arrangements for the same-sex wedding of a longtime customer – due to her religious beliefs about marriage. It has sued Catholic hospitals in an attempt to force them to provide abortions. And the ACLU has sued school districts in order to open up showers, restrooms, and locker rooms to members of the opposite sex.
Punished for Wearing MAGA Sweatshirt at School – Find out How This Student Responded
It has become an all-too-familiar scene on public high school and college campuses.
A group of students peacefully express themselves and then are threatened and ridiculed by students and teachers with opposing points of view. Rather than protect and promote students’ freedom to express themselves, administrators quickly move to punish the former group of students rather than those who threatened them.
Why My Student Group Is Suing the University of Florida
In October 2017, University of Florida (UF) President Kent Fuchs stated he was “shocked” to learn that universities funded by public money are bound to uphold the First Amendment.

It has been almost two years since Fresno State Professor Greg Thatcher recruited students out of his classroom to help him wipe away university-approved pro-life chalk messages written by my student group, Students for Life at Fresno State. All of this was caught on video. Shortly after this incident, in May 2017, Alliance Defending Freedom filed a lawsuit on our behalf to defend our First Amendment rights. And a few months later, we won the case.

Dr. Nicholas Meriwether has served as a philosophy professor at Shawnee State University for over 20 years.
And until recently, he did so without a blemish on his record. Last fall, however, Shawnee State launched an investigation into Dr. Meriwether, formally punished him, and placed a warning in his file – claiming he “created a hostile environment.”
So what changed?

How This Christian Professor Took a Stand for His Faith—and How You Can Help Him
As Christians, we know that there will be a time when we have to stand up for our faith. We may not know the circumstances surrounding that stand, but Jesus does tell us in John 16:33 that “in the world you will have tribulation.”
It’s not easy being a Christian, even though we are blessed to live in a country where our freedom to believe and speak is protected. But now, these freedoms are under attack. And the day that we will have to take a stand may come sooner than we think.
