Young Americans for Freedom at Des Moines Area Community College

Summary

When a student at Des Moines Area Community College attempted to start a Young Americans for Freedom chapter in 2012, school officials demanded he insert a “nondiscrimination” clause into the club’s constitution. Believing such a clause could prevent the club from requiring that members or leaders of the club share the beliefs the club was created to foster, the student contacted ADF. ADF used a public records request to examine the constitutions of other student groups at the college, and successfully assisted the student in drafting a constitution that was approved by the school, without sacrificing his First Amendment rights.
