Alliance Defending Freedom is following the 2017 NCAA men’s basketball tournament by filling out a bracket based on each university’s history of violating its students’ First Amendment freedoms.

“The madness on college campuses is unfortunately not limited to March,” said ADF Senior Counsel Casey Mattox, director of the ADF Center for Academic Freedom and an avid college basketball fan. “Because I have spent most of my legal career suing universities that violate students’ First Amendment freedoms, I can’t help but think about the speech policies on these campuses when I fill out my bracket, so I wanted to try picking an NCAA Tournament bracket if the schools with the worst free speech records advanced. Mattox explains the rationale for his choices in a post on the ADF blog. Anyone who disagrees with his choices can pick their own winner at the ADF “Bracket of Shame” page. Sports fans can also track how Mattox’s choices fare as teams advance on the ESPN Tournament Challenge site.

ADF has litigated at least 20 cases against the universities and university systems represented in this year’s NCAA Tournament and has secured nearly 400 victories for student free speech rights on public university campuses to date.
