When Karissa Erickson, a graduating student at Colorado Mesa University, put together her remarks to speak at the nursing school’s pinning ceremony, she included a reference to Jesus and a Bible verse. But a university official told her to remove those references, saying, “Speeches should be free of any one religious slant.” Other officials threatened her with “repercussions” if she refused, saying the nursing “program will not tolerate [this Christian content].”

House Bill 4440 seeks to protect students at South Carolina’s public universities from becoming the next victims of this sort of abuse. Why is this legislation necessary? First, it protects the rights of students from university officials who either do not understand or do not care about the First Amendment.

Colleges and universities across the U.S. have been misusing nondiscrimination policies to prohibit student clubs from choosing their leaders based on shared beliefs: whether shared political values, or faith in the very religious beliefs the group is formed to foster. Yesterday, this abuse stopped at two Universities.

According to university policies, students are barred from giving outdoor speeches and rallying on campus during class hours, except from noon to 1:00 pm each day. If they do decide to speak or rally during this time, they must do so on a tiny speech zone outside of the student union. That space makes up less than 1 percent of the 1,400 acre campus. University campuses may be slowing down as students leave for the holidays, but universities across the country are keeping Alliance Defending Freedom busy.

Too much of a “similar” viewpoint is a bad thing, according to officials at the University of California Berkeley. That is, unless it is a favored viewpoint.

This year, university officials at Miami University of Ohio told Students for Life they were not permitted to put up their display without also posting warning signs around campus, basically discouraging people from viewing the exhibit. They feared the display might cause “emotional trauma” for other students. A university official also characterized the display as “harmful for some of [the university’s] community members.”
